Wi-Fi Aware Paring Flow
Hello, I understand that to discover and pair a device or accessory with Wi-Fi Aware, we can use either the DeviceDiscoveryUI or AccessorySetupKitUI frameworks. During the pairing process, both frameworks prompt the user to enter a pairing code. Is this step mandatory? What alternatives exist for devices or accessories that don't have a way to communicate a pairing code to the user (for example, devices or accessories without a display or voice capability)? iOS26 captive portal detection changes?
Hi all, I work on a smart product that, for setup, uses a captive portal to allow users to connect and configure the device. It emits a WiFi network and runs a captive portal - an HTTP server operates at 10.0.0.1, and a DNS server responds to all requests with 10.0.0.1 to direct "any and all" request to the server. When iOS devices connect, they send a request to captive.apple.com/hotspot-detect.html; if it returns success, that means they're on the internet; if not, the typical behavior in the past has been to assume you're connected to a captive portal and display what's being served. I serve any requests to /hotspot-detect.html with my captive portal page (index.html). This has worked reliably on iOS18 for a long time (user selects my products WiFi network, iOS detects portal and opens it). But almost everyone who's now trying with iOS26 is having the "automatic pop up" behavior fail - usually it says "Error opening page - Hotspot login cannot open the page because the network connection was lost." However, if opening safari and navigating to any URL (or 10.0.0.1) the portal loads - it's just the iOS auto-detect and open that's not working iOS18 always succeeds; iOS26 always fails. Anybody have any idea what changes may have been introduced in iOS26 on this front, or anything I can do to help prompt or coax iOS26 into loading the portal? It typically starts reading, but then stops mid-read.

If I am the subscriber of the service and successfully complete the follow-up frame exchange of pairing bootstrapping, I see the PIN code displayed by iOS. Question 1: How should I use this PIN code? Question 2: Subsequently, I need to negotiate keys with iOS through PASN. What should I use as the password for the PASN SAE process? My app attempts to use a socket to establish a connection with my external device, but it fails
My external device can generate a fixed Wi-Fi network. When I connect to this Wi-Fi using my iPhone 17 Pro Max (iOS version 26.0.1), and my app tries to establish a connection using the following method, this method returns -1 int connect(int, const struct sockaddr *, socklen_t) __DARWIN_ALIAS_C(connect); However, when I use other phones, such as iPhone 12, iPhone 8, iPhone 11, etc., to connect to this external device, the above method always returns successfully, with the parameters passed to the method remaining the same. I also tried resetting the network settings on the iPhone 17 Pro Max (iOS version 26.0.1), but it still cannot establish a connection.

NETransparentProxyProvider frequent tunnel churn during Dark Wake cycles on macOS.
Description Our NETransparentProxyProvider system extension maintains a persistent TLS/DTLS control channel to a security gateway. To maintain this stateful connection the extension sends application-level "Keep Alive" packets every few seconds (example : 20 seconds). The Issue: When the macOS device enters a sleep state, the Network Extension process is suspended, causing our application-level heartbeat to cease. Consequently, our backend gateway—detecting no activity—terminates the session via Dead Peer Detection (DPD). The problem is exacerbated by macOS Dark Wake cycles. We observe the extension's wake() callback being triggered periodically (approx. every 15 minutes) while the device remains in a sleep state (lid closed). During these brief windows: The extension attempts to use the existing socket, finds it terminated by the backend, and initiates a full re-handshake. Shortly after the connection is re-established, the OS triggers the sleep() callback and suspends the process again. This creates a "connection churn" cycle that generates excessive telemetry noise and misleading "Session Disconnected" alerts for our enterprise customers. Steps to Reproduce Activate Proxy: Start the NETransparentProxyProvider and establish a TLS session to a gateway. Apply Settings: Configure NETransparentProxyNetworkSettings to intercept outbound TCP/UDP traffic. Initialize Heartbeat: Start a 20-second timer (DispatchSourceTimer) to log and send keep-alive packets. Induce Sleep: Put the Mac to sleep (Apple Menu > Sleep). Observe Logs: Monitor the system via sysdiagnose or the macOS Console. Observation: Logs stop entirely during sleep, indicating process suspension. Observation: wake() and sleep() callbacks are triggered repeatedly during Dark Wake intervals, causing a cycle of re-connections. Expected Behavior We seek to minimize connection turnover during maintenance wakes and maintain session stability while the device is technically in a sleep state. Questions for Apple Is it possible to suppress the sleep and wake callback methods of NETransparentProxyProvider when the device is performing a maintenance/Dark Wake, only triggering them for a full user-initiated wake? Is it possible to prevent the NETransparentProxyProvider process from being suspended during sleep, or at least grant it a high-priority background execution slot to maintain the heartbeat? If suspension is mandatory, is there a recommended way to utilize TCP_KEEPALIVE socket options that the kernel can handle on behalf of the suspended extension? How can the extension programmatically identify if a wake() call is a "Dark Wake" versus a "Full User Wake" to avoid unnecessary re-connection logic?

SwiftSMTP broken: Error ioOnClosedChannel on latest macOS
Hi! I wrote an internal used backup command line tool which is in use since several years. Today I got an error while sending an email: “Failed: ioOnClosedChannel”. I assume that the latest macOS updates did break my app. On the server I use macOS 15.7 and on my development machine macOS 26. How can a Network Extension notify or trigger tasks in the main app when it’s backgrounded or killed?
I’m developing a iOS VPN app, and I need to execute a task in the main app even when it’s in the background or killed state. I know the Network Extension continues running during those times. Is there a way for the extension to immediately notify the app or trigger a task on the app side?

[iOS 26] Unable to start TLS handshake connection to devices with self-signed certificates
Hi there, We are facing some issues regarding TLS connectivity: Starting with iOS 26, the operating system refuses to open TLS sockets to local devices with self-signed certificates over Wi-Fi. In this situation, connection is no longer possible, even if the device is detected on the network with Bonjour. We have not found a workaround for this problem. We've tryied those solutions without success: Added the 'NSAppTransportSecurity' key to the info.plist file, testing all its items, such as "NSAllowsLocalNetworking", "NSExceptionDomains", etc. Various code changes to use properties such as "sec_protocol_options_set_local_identity" and "sec_protocol_options_set_tls_server_name" to no avail. Brutally import the certificate files into the project and load them via, for example, "Bundle.main.url(forResource: "nice_INTERFACE_server_cert", withExtension: "crt")", using methods such as sec_trust_copy_ref and SecCertificateCopyData. Download the .pem or .crt files to the iPhone, install them (now visible under "VPN & Device Management"), and then flag them as trusted by going to "Settings -> General -> Info -> Trust". certificates" The most critical part seems to be the line sec_protocol_options_set_verify_block(tlsOptions.securityProtocolOptions, { $2(true) }, queue) whose purpose is to bypass certificate checks and validate all of them (as apps already do). However, on iOS26, if I set a breakpoint on leg$2(true),` it never gets there, while on iOS 18, it does. I'll leave as example the part of the code that was tested the most below. ISP DNS Resolution in Full-Tunnel VPN
I am running a full-tunnel VPN using a Packet Tunnel Provider. During VPN setup, we configure DNS setting with specific DNS servers for all domains to be used by the tunnel. However, our project requires DNS resolution for every domain from both the VPN-provided DNS servers and the ISP’s DNS servers. When I attempt to use c-ares or other third-party libraries to resolve domains via the ISP DNS servers, these libraries only detect and use the VPN DNS servers instead. As a result, all queries fail. Is there a way on iOS to programmatically determine the ISP DNS servers while a full-tunnel VPN is active, or a system API that allows DNS queries to be explicitly resolved using the ISP’s DNS servers?

DMG Distribution for macOS App with App Extension — Should I Use System Extension Instead?
Hi everyone, I’m currently developing a macOS app that is distributed via a DMG file on our website. The app includes an App Extension (appex) for Network Extension functionality. I’m wondering if distributing via DMG on the web requires the app extension to be implemented as a System Extension instead of an App Extension. Is it necessary to migrate to System Extension for web-based DMG distribution, or can I continue using App Extension as is? Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I am developing an iOS application using NWPathMonitor for network connectivity monitoring. We discovered a reproducible issue where disabling and re-enabling WiFi triggers an unexpected network status sequence. ENVIRONMENT: iOS Version: 17.x Device: iPhone (various models tested) Network Framework: NWPathMonitor from iOS Network framework STEPS TO REPRODUCE: Device connected to WiFi normally Disable WiFi via Settings or Control Center Re-enable WiFi via Settings or Control Center EXPECTED BEHAVIOR: WiFi reconnects and NWPathMonitor reports stable satisfied status ACTUAL BEHAVIOR: T+0s: WiFi re-enables, NWPathMonitor reports path.status = .satisfied T+8s: NWPathMonitor unexpectedly reports path.status = .unsatisfied with unsatisfiedReason = .notAvailable T+9-10s: NWPathMonitor reports path.status = .satisfied again Connection becomes stable afterward NETWORK PATH TIMELINE: T+0s: satisfied (IPv4: true, DNS: false) T+140ms: satisfied (IPv4: true, DNS: true) T+8.0s: unsatisfied (reason: notAvailable, no interfaces available) T+10.0s: satisfied (IPv4: true, DNS: true) KEY OBSERVATIONS: Timing consistency: unsatisfied event always occurs ~8 seconds after reconnection resolution: "Reset Network Settings" eliminates this behavior TECHNICAL QUESTIONS: What causes the 8-second delayed unsatisfied status after WiFi re-enablement? Disable QUIC/HTTP3 support for specific MacOS application
Hello, I am currently investigating if we can disable usage of QUIC on application level. I know we can set enable_quic from /Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkd.plist to false but it will have a global impact since this is a system file, all the applications on machine will stop using QUIC. I don't want that. What i am looking for is to disable QUIC only for my application. Is there any way i can modify URLSession object in my application and disable QUIC? or modify URLSessionConfiguration so system will not use QUIC?

Intercept local connections with NETransparentProxyProvider
I am trying to intercept localhost connections within NETransparentProxyProvider system extension. As per NENetworkRule documentation If the address is a wildcard address (0.0.0.0 or ::) then the rule will match all destinations except for loopback (127.0.0.1 or ::1). To match loopback traffic set the address to the loopback address. I tried to add NWHostEndpoint *localhostv4 = [NWHostEndpoint endpointWithHostname:@"127.0.0.1" port:@""]; NENetworkRule *localhostv4Rule = [[NENetworkRule alloc] initWithDestinationNetwork:localhostv4 prefix:32 protocol:NENetworkRuleProtocolAny]; in the include network rules. I tried several variations of this rule like port 0, prefix 0 and some others. But the provider disregards the rule and the never receives any traffic going to localhost on any port. Is there any other configuration required to receive localhost traffic in NETransparentProxyProvider?

TCP socket disconnection with EBROKENPIPE during file copy of signed app bundle
We are developing a client server application using TCP bsd sockets. When our client is connected to the server, copying another client .app bundle from a file server on the same machine (using Finder or terminal using cp), occasionally causes the first client to disconnect. The client receives an EBROKENPIPE error when attempting to write to its socket. In the Console, the following message appears just before the disconnection: necp_socket_find_policy_match: Marking socket in state 258 as defunct This issue seems to occur only when copying an .app bundle signed with the same TeamIdentifier as the running client. Copying arbitrary files or bundles with a different TeamIdentifier does not trigger the problem. We are running on macOS 15.5. The issue appears specific to macOS 15 and was not observed on earlier versions. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

AccessorySetupKit / Wi-Fi Aware example?
Greetings, According to Apple's Wi-Fi Aware documentation (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/wifiaware) the Wi-Fi Aware APIs can be used only with peer devices that have been paired. Pairing can be performed using AccessorySetupKit or DeviceDiscoveryUI. Unfortunately, the sample code for Wi-Fi Aware doesn't include either of these APIs. (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/wifiaware/building-peer-to-peer-apps) Looking at the sample code for AccessorySetupKit (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/accessorysetupkit/setting-up-and-authorizing-a-bluetooth-accessory) there is only an example using Bluetooth. And the AccessorySetupKit APIs don't yet document how Wi-Fi Aware is used or how one sets up the Info.plist with the appropriate keys. Can Apple update its example code to fill in these gaps or point me to documentation that can fill in these gaps? It is hard to develop an understanding of the capabilities of these APIs when they are so poorly documented. Thanks for any help, Smith

My app attempts to use a socket to establish a connection with my external device, but it fails
My external device can generate a fixed Wi-Fi network. When I connect to this Wi-Fi using my iPhone 17 Pro Max (iOS version 26.0.1), and my app tries to establish a connection using the following method, this method returns -1 int connect(int, const struct sockaddr *, socklen_t) __DARWIN_ALIAS_C(connect); However, when I use other phones, such as iPhone 12, iPhone 8, iPhone 11, etc., to connect to this external device, the above method always returns successfully, with the parameters passed to the method remaining the same. I also tried resetting the network settings on the iPhone 17 Pro Max (iOS version 26.0.1), but it still cannot establish a connection.

NETransparentProxyProvider frequent tunnel churn during Dark Wake cycles on macOS.
Description Our NETransparentProxyProvider system extension maintains a persistent TLS/DTLS control channel to a security gateway. To maintain this stateful connection the extension sends application-level "Keep Alive" packets every few seconds (example : 20 seconds). The Issue: When the macOS device enters a sleep state, the Network Extension process is suspended, causing our application-level heartbeat to cease. Consequently, our backend gateway—detecting no activity—terminates the session via Dead Peer Detection (DPD). The problem is exacerbated by macOS Dark Wake cycles. We observe the extension's wake() callback being triggered periodically (approx. every 15 minutes) while the device remains in a sleep state (lid closed). During these brief windows: The extension attempts to use the existing socket, finds it terminated by the backend, and initiates a full re-handshake. Shortly after the connection is re-established, the OS triggers the sleep() callback and suspends the process again. This creates a "connection churn" cycle that generates excessive telemetry noise and misleading "Session Disconnected" alerts for our enterprise customers. Steps to Reproduce Activate Proxy: Start the NETransparentProxyProvider and establish a TLS session to a gateway. Apply Settings: Configure NETransparentProxyNetworkSettings to intercept outbound TCP/UDP traffic. Initialize Heartbeat: Start a 20-second timer (DispatchSourceTimer) to log and send keep-alive packets. Induce Sleep: Put the Mac to sleep (Apple Menu > Sleep). Observe Logs: Monitor the system via sysdiagnose or the macOS Console. Observation: Logs stop entirely during sleep, indicating process suspension. Observation: wake() and sleep() callbacks are triggered repeatedly during Dark Wake intervals, causing a cycle of re-connections. Expected Behavior We seek to minimize connection turnover during maintenance wakes and maintain session stability while the device is technically in a sleep state. Questions for Apple Is it possible to suppress the sleep and wake callback methods of NETransparentProxyProvider when the device is performing a maintenance/Dark Wake, only triggering them for a full user-initiated wake? Is it possible to prevent the NETransparentProxyProvider process from being suspended during sleep, or at least grant it a high-priority background execution slot to maintain the heartbeat? If suspension is mandatory, is there a recommended way to utilize TCP_KEEPALIVE socket options that the kernel can handle on behalf of the suspended extension? How can the extension programmatically identify if a wake() call is a "Dark Wake" versus a "Full User Wake" to avoid unnecessary re-connection logic?

SwiftSMTP broken: Error ioOnClosedChannel on latest macOS
Hi! I wrote an internal used backup command line tool which is in use since several years. Today I got an error while sending an email: “Failed: ioOnClosedChannel”. I assume that the latest macOS updates did break my app. On the server I use macOS 15.7 and on my development machine macOS 26. I’m developing a iOS VPN app, and I need to execute a task in the main app even when it’s in the background or killed state. I know the Network Extension continues running during those times. Is there a way for the extension to immediately notify the app or trigger a task on the app side?

[iOS 26] Unable to start TLS handshake connection to devices with self-signed certificates
Hi there, We are facing some issues regarding TLS connectivity: Starting with iOS 26, the operating system refuses to open TLS sockets to local devices with self-signed certificates over Wi-Fi. In this situation, connection is no longer possible, even if the device is detected on the network with Bonjour. We have not found a workaround for this problem. We've tryied those solutions without success: Added the 'NSAppTransportSecurity' key to the info.plist file, testing all its items, such as "NSAllowsLocalNetworking", "NSExceptionDomains", etc. Various code changes to use properties such as "sec_protocol_options_set_local_identity" and "sec_protocol_options_set_tls_server_name" to no avail. Brutally import the certificate files into the project and load them via, for example, "Bundle.main.url(forResource: "nice_INTERFACE_server_cert", withExtension: "crt")", using methods such as sec_trust_copy_ref and SecCertificateCopyData. Download the .pem or .crt files to the iPhone, install them (now visible under "VPN & Device Management"), and then flag them as trusted by going to "Settings -> General -> Info -> Trust". certificates" The most critical part seems to be the line sec_protocol_options_set_verify_block(tlsOptions.securityProtocolOptions, { $2(true) }, queue) whose purpose is to bypass certificate checks and validate all of them (as apps already do). However, on iOS26, if I set a breakpoint on leg$2(true),` it never gets there, while on iOS 18, it does. I'll leave as example the part of the code that was tested the most below. Local IP address does not work with MacOS Sequoia
Hi, after upgrading to MacOS Sequoia, my connection to my local IP address does not work. The issue is with the PF (MacOS advanced firewall), as I confirmed that my local application works disabling it temporarily. Does anyone know how can I do to solve this problem? ISP DNS Resolution in Full-Tunnel VPN
I am running a full-tunnel VPN using a Packet Tunnel Provider. During VPN setup, we configure DNS setting with specific DNS servers for all domains to be used by the tunnel. However, our project requires DNS resolution for every domain from both the VPN-provided DNS servers and the ISP’s DNS servers. When I attempt to use c-ares or other third-party libraries to resolve domains via the ISP DNS servers, these libraries only detect and use the VPN DNS servers instead. As a result, all queries fail. Is there a way on iOS to programmatically determine the ISP DNS servers while a full-tunnel VPN is active, or a system API that allows DNS queries to be explicitly resolved using the ISP’s DNS servers?

DMG Distribution for macOS App with App Extension — Should I Use System Extension Instead?
Hi everyone, I’m currently developing a macOS app that is distributed via a DMG file on our website. The app includes an App Extension (appex) for Network Extension functionality. I’m wondering if distributing via DMG on the web requires the app extension to be implemented as a System Extension instead of an App Extension. Is it necessary to migrate to System Extension for web-based DMG distribution, or can I continue using App Extension as is? Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

NWPathMonitor Reports Unexpected satisfied→unsatisfied→satisfied Sequence After WiFi Re-enablement
I am developing an iOS application using NWPathMonitor for network connectivity monitoring. We discovered a reproducible issue where disabling and re-enabling WiFi triggers an unexpected network status sequence. ENVIRONMENT: iOS Version: 17.x Device: iPhone (various models tested) Network Framework: NWPathMonitor from iOS Network framework STEPS TO REPRODUCE: Device connected to WiFi normally Disable WiFi via Settings or Control Center Re-enable WiFi via Settings or Control Center EXPECTED BEHAVIOR: WiFi reconnects and NWPathMonitor reports stable satisfied status ACTUAL BEHAVIOR: T+0s: WiFi re-enables, NWPathMonitor reports path.status = .satisfied T+8s: NWPathMonitor unexpectedly reports path.status = .unsatisfied with unsatisfiedReason = .notAvailable T+9-10s: NWPathMonitor reports path.status = .satisfied again Connection becomes stable afterward NETWORK PATH TIMELINE: T+0s: satisfied (IPv4: true, DNS: false) T+140ms: satisfied (IPv4: true, DNS: true) T+8.0s: unsatisfied (reason: notAvailable, no interfaces available) T+10.0s: satisfied (IPv4: true, DNS: true) KEY OBSERVATIONS: Timing consistency: unsatisfied event always occurs ~8 seconds after reconnection resolution: "Reset Network Settings" eliminates this behavior TECHNICAL QUESTIONS: What causes the 8-second delayed unsatisfied status after WiFi re-enablement? Is this expected behavior that applications should handle? Why does reset network setting in iPhone fix this issue?

Disable QUIC/HTTP3 support for specific MacOS application
Hello, I am currently investigating if we can disable usage of QUIC on application level. I know we can set enable_quic from /Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkd.plist to false but it will have a global impact since this is a system file, all the applications on machine will stop using QUIC. I don't want that. What i am looking for is to disable QUIC only for my application. Is there any way i can modify URLSession object in my application and disable QUIC? or modify URLSessionConfiguration so system will not use QUIC?

Intercept local connections with NETransparentProxyProvider
I am trying to intercept localhost connections within NETransparentProxyProvider system extension. As per NENetworkRule documentation If the address is a wildcard address (0.0.0.0 or ::) then the rule will match all destinations except for loopback (127.0.0.1 or ::1). To match loopback traffic set the address to the loopback address. I tried to add NWHostEndpoint *localhostv4 = [NWHostEndpoint endpointWithHostname:@"127.0.0.1" port:@""]; NENetworkRule *localhostv4Rule = [[NENetworkRule alloc] initWithDestinationNetwork:localhostv4 prefix:32 protocol:NENetworkRuleProtocolAny]; in the include network rules. I tried several variations of this rule like port 0, prefix 0 and some others. But the provider disregards the rule and the never receives any traffic going to localhost on any port. Is there any other configuration required to receive localhost traffic in NETransparentProxyProvider?

TCP socket disconnection with EBROKENPIPE during file copy of signed app bundle
We are developing a client server application using TCP bsd sockets. When our client is connected to the server, copying another client .app bundle from a file server on the same machine (using Finder or terminal using cp), occasionally causes the first client to disconnect. The client receives an EBROKENPIPE error when attempting to write to its socket. In the Console, the following message appears just before the disconnection: necp_socket_find_policy_match: Marking socket in state 258 as defunct This issue seems to occur only when copying an .app bundle signed with the same TeamIdentifier as the running client. Copying arbitrary files or bundles with a different TeamIdentifier does not trigger the problem. We are running on macOS 15.5. The issue appears specific to macOS 15 and was not observed on earlier versions. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

AccessorySetupKit / Wi-Fi Aware example?
Greetings, According to Apple's Wi-Fi Aware documentation (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/wifiaware) the Wi-Fi Aware APIs can be used only with peer devices that have been paired. Pairing can be performed using AccessorySetupKit or DeviceDiscoveryUI. Unfortunately, the sample code for Wi-Fi Aware doesn't include either of these APIs. (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/wifiaware/building-peer-to-peer-apps) Looking at the sample code for AccessorySetupKit (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/accessorysetupkit/setting-up-and-authorizing-a-bluetooth-accessory) there is only an example using Bluetooth. And the AccessorySetupKit APIs don't yet document how Wi-Fi Aware is used or how one sets up the Info.plist with the appropriate keys. Can Apple update its example code to fill in these gaps or point me to documentation that can fill in these gaps? It is hard to develop an understanding of the capabilities of these APIs when they are so poorly documented. Thanks for any help, Smith
