Launching an apple watch app from the companion app
Hi, as stated in the title I'm trying to launch a watchOS app from its companion iOS app. My issue is very similar to this post: https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/734362 The response from apple in that post says that it is not possible, but I have found it to be possible for media apps. Specifically if you turn Settings > General > Auto-Launch > Live Activities > Media Apps and turn Auto-Launch to "App". My app is for medical research and having this available would be very helpful for our testing. I need the app to be fully in the foreground. Is there a way to get specific permissions for our app to do this? Am I missing something? I've tried starting a workout session to accomplish this, but it only seems to work when the watch is charging. Any feedback is appreciated, thank you.

Issues with Family Control API: App Blocking & Screen Time for Multiple Children
We are developing a parental control application in SwiftUI with features like app blocking and screen time management. We are using the Family Control API along with Apple Family Sharing, allowing parents to add multiple children to the family group. We have followed the apple documentation still we are facing following issues: App Blocking Issue: The family picker does not display each child's name separately or their apps individually. Instead, it shows all children's apps together, making it difficult to block apps for a specific child. Screen Time Data Issue: We receive the total screen time usage for all children combined rather than separate screen time data for each child. Syncing Delay: When a new child is added to the Family Sharing group, we are unsure how long it takes for their apps to sync and appear on the parent’s device.

Use VZVirtualMachineView with actor-isolated VZVirtualMachine
We are using VZVirtualMachine instances in a Swift actor. It works fine but we hit a major problem when we decided that we want to attach it to a VZVirtualMachineView to show it / allow user interactions. VZVirtualMachineView and its virtualMachine property is isolated to @MainActor, so if we directly assign our vm instance to it, we receive a concurrency error: @MainActor public func createView() -> VZVirtualMachineView { let view = VZVirtualMachineView() view.virtualMachine = vm // x: Actor-isolated property 'vm' can not be referenced from the main actor return view } Is there any way we can make this work?

Calling from Watchos
I am working with a watchOS app in SwiftUI, and I am using the following code to dial a phone number from the watch: var number = "123456789" if let telURL = URL(string: "tel:\(number)") { let wkExtension = WKExtension.shared() wkExtension.openSystemURL(telURL) } The issue is that when I try to dial a number starting with a * (asterisk) or # (hash), it doesn't work. When dialing a regular number, it works fine. Is there any way to get this to work?

Tokens change without reason after updating to iOS 17.5.1
Some of our users encounter an issue after updating their iPhone/iPad to iOS 17.5.1. The tokens passed in the Shield Configuration extension don't match the tokens they selected in my app using the FamilyPicker before updating to iOS 17.5.1. It seems the tokens changed for no reason. My app can't match the token from the ShieldConfigurationDataSource to any tokens stored on my end, causing my shield screens to turn blank. The same applies to tokens in the Device Activity Report extension. The only workaround I've found is to tell affected users to unselect and reselect apps and websites to block in my app. This gets them new tokens from the FamilyActivityPicker, which solves the issue. However, for some users, the bug reoccurs a few days later. Tokens seem to change again, causing the same issue in the Shield Configuration extension. I am not able to reproduce the issue on my test devices so I have no sysdiagnose to attach. However, this issue is affecting other screen time apps: https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/732845 https://forums.developer.apple.com/forums/thread/756440 FB14082790 FB14111223 A change in iOS 17.5.1 must have triggered this behaviour. Could an Apple engineer give us any updates on this?

Weatherkit - visibility units and height
reposting this in case it got missed the first time around here https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/775900 We had a question that came up when we comparing data from WeatherKit to other sources - WeatherKit visibility was well beyond the boundaries we had historically, even from Darksky. That raises two questions: is visibility actually in meters like the docs say? is this visibility at ground level, 500ft, or some other height? We were seeing visibility numbers of up to 40 miles (after converting the number the API sent to miles), where all of our other sources are usually within 10 miles

Will the call screening feature be available in all iOS 26 capable iPhones?
I'm pretty excited for the all new iOS 26 redesign, but what I'm most excited for is the call screening feature to avoid unwanted calls. I downloaded the developer's beta on my secondary device to report bugs, but call screening doesn't work on it even though it's turned on. I already sent a feedback report, but I'm not sure if it's just a beta bug or that my iPhone won't support it. I haven't found much info about it. It's a 2nd gen SE. Thanks.

Token Selection from DeviceActivityReport
I'd like to allow users to select apps to shield from a DeviceActivityReport (similar to how Apple's Screen Time Settings activity report allows a user to "add limits" to a selected app in the report. What I need to do is pass an appToken from the DeviceActivityReportExtension to my app. I realize the extension is sandboxed and doesn't allow "private" data to be seen outside of the sandbox. The docs state: To protect the user’s privacy, your extension runs in a sandbox. This sandbox prevents your extension from making network requests or moving sensitive content outside the extension’s address space. However, tokens aren't "sensitive". I want to pass a token set out of the sandboxed extension so users can select certain apps from the report that my app can use for setting limits, etc. I thought using App Groups and saving data with UserDefaults with a suiteName for my app group would do it, but it doesn't appear to allow me to pass the token data. Yes I'm using the same KEY for both as I set a config enum to ensure it's the same and I can pass tokens successfully between other extensions/apps in the app group, but not the report extension. It seems the app and the extension have their own stores as the report extension can write to and read from a store but despite being the same suiteName, other apps in the app group don't get or send data to the Report Extension. I realize this is probably due to the design with the sandbox to protect user privacy, however it seems an exception should be made for passing tokens (or even better allow passing through another method like a callback, etc). Is there ay way to accomplish passing a token from the sandboxed report extension to my app?

URLSession Token Authentication: What's the 'correct' way to do it?
I'm working on an API client for a REST service that uses a custom token-based authentiation scheme. The app hits a specificed authentication endpoint with a username and password, said endpoint returns a token that's good for X amount of time, and the app passes that token along with every subsequent request. When that token expires, we start over. Most literature out there tells me to manually set the Authorization header on my request, but official Apple documentation discourages this, as that header is meant to be 'owned' by the built-in HTTP loading system. That said, official documentation on the 'correct' way to do this is shockingly lacking, and the standard didReceiveChallenge callbacks seem better suited for non-custom Basic/Digest/etc authentication schemes. One thought I had was registering my own URLProtocol subclass to handle our custom flow. However, while I haven't had a chance to sit down and take a crack at that yet, my understanding from skimming these forums is that it's suffering from some bit-rot right now, so it 'might' (?) not be the best choice. That, and it's also not clear to me whether the rules around the Authorization header change when a custom URLProtocol is in play. So, community (paging eskimo in particular!), what's the correct way for me to go about this?

UpdateApplicationContext Not Receiving updates
Hi community. It's my first time trying WatchConnectivity kit. When I attempt to send ApplicationContext from phone, my debug print indicates that updateApplicationContext is working correctly. However, I'm having trouble receiving it form the paired watch simulator as nothing is shown on that end. [String]{             print("\(getState)")             self.state = getState[0]         }     } Any suggestion would be appreciated!

FamilyActivityPicker Crashing / Freezing
Our users report frequent crashes with the FamilyActivityPicker. Since this is a screen controlled by Apple, I'm assuming that there's nothing I can do to prevent these crashes. I'm wondering, though, if there's any way to gracefully handle these crashes? When this happens, the following is printed to the console: [com.apple.FamilyControls.ActivityPickerExtension(1121)] Connection to plugin invalidated while in use. Does anyone know how to handle/catch this error?

How does font caching / resources for each app work?
I'm a font developer. In the development process, I will revise a font and overwrite the OTF file that is currently enabled (registered) with macOS. If I then launch an app, it will immediately use the revised version of the font; while apps that are already loaded will continue to use the old version. This suggests that each app is loading new and separate font data, rather than getting it from some existing cache in memory. Yet macOS does have a "font cache" of some sort. Some apps, like TextEdit, seem to only load the fonts that they need to use. However, other apps, like Pages, load every enabled (registered) font on the OS!! (According to the Open Files list in Activity Monitor.) Given that /System/Library/Fonts/ is 625 Mb, and we can't disable any of it, isn't that a lot of data to be repeating? How many fonts is too many fonts? I can't find much documentation about the process.

Universal links: Open in "MyApp" doesn't launch my app
I've a strange problem which is only occurring on 2 client devices. We have enabled Universal links, and have it fully tested and working. On one client device, the link never opens our app; but here's the strange thing: If I long-press on our link (in Messages), it gives a preview (as expected), and the context menu offers "Open in ", as well as "Open in Safari". Tapping on "Open in " does nothing. I've tried the following: Checked I could access the site-association file over https with no redirects Enabled developer mode and used universal link debug feature: pasted the same link - Developer mode says it will open the app. I've carried out the sysdiagnose; And there are entries in there for our app in swcutil_show.txt. Token Selection from DeviceActivityReport

Snipped below: Service: applinks App ID: <my fully qualified app bundle id> App Version: 760.0 App PI: <LSPersistentIdentifier 0x6b8008930> { v = 0, t = 0x8, u = 0x45c, db = DC8D18A2-430D-4AD4-A5BE-B7A003CF9A6F, {length = 8, bytes = 0x5c04000000000000} } Domain: www.<mydomain>.com Patterns: {"/":"/cc/*"}, {"?":{"t":"*"},"/":"/md/"} User Approval: unspecified Site/Fmwk Approval: approved Flags: Last Checked: 2025-04-29 09:10:21 +0000 Next Check: 2025-05-04 08:42:50 +0000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Service: applinks App ID: <my fully qualified app bundle id> App Version: 760.0 App PI: <LSPersistentIdentifier 0x6b8008930> { v = 0, t = 0x8, u = 0x45c, db = DC8D18A2-430D-4AD4-A5BE-B7A003CF9A6F, {length = 8, bytes = 0x5c04000000000000} } Domain: <mydomain>.com Patterns: {"/":"/cc/*"}, {"?":{"t":"*"},"/":"/md/"} User Approval: unspecified Site/Fmwk Approval: approved Flags: Last Checked: 2025-04-29 09:10:21 +0000 Next Check: 2025-05-04 08:42:50 +0000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Service: applinks App ID: <my fully qualified app bundle id> App Version: 760.0 App PI: <LSPersistentIdentifier 0x6b8008930> { v = 0, t = 0x8, u = 0x45c, db = DC8D18A2-430D-4AD4-A5BE-B7A003CF9A6F, {length = 8, bytes = 0x5c04000000000000} } Domain: *.<mydomain>.com Patterns: {"/":"/cc/*"}, {"?":{"t":"*"},"/":"/md/"} User Approval: unspecified Site/Fmwk Approval: approved Flags: Last Checked: 2025-04-29 09:10:21 +0000 Next Check: 2025-05-04 08:42:50 +0000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The version numbers match the installed version of my app I've tried running logging and just capturing logs before and after I press the "open in ", but there's nothing suspicious in there. And the kicker - it's only happening on a single device. No other devices are experiencing this.
