Issue using Siphon Tap on input AudioQueue
Hi all, I've developed an audio DSP application in C++ using AudioToolbox and CoreAudio on MacOS 14.4.1 with Xcode 15. I use an AudioQueue for input and another for output. This works great. I'm now adding real-time audio analysis eg spectral analysis. I want this to run independently of my audio processing so it can not interfere with audio playback. Taps on AudioQueues seem to be a good way of doing this... Since the analytics won't modify the audio data, I am using a Siphon Tap by setting the AudioQueueProcessingTapFlags to kAudioQueueProcessingTap_PreEffects | kAudioQueueProcessingTap_Siphon; This works fine on my output queue. However, on my input queue the Tap callback is called once and then a EXC_BAD_ACCESS occurs - screen shot below. NB: I believe that a callback should only call AudioQueueProcessingTapGetSourceAudio when not using a Siphon, so I don't call it. Relevant code: AudioQueueProcessingTapCallback tap_callback) { // Makes an audio tap for a queue void * tap_data_ptr = NULL; AudioQueueProcessingTapFlags tap_flags = kAudioQueueProcessingTap_PostEffects | kAudioQueueProcessingTap_Siphon; uint32_t max_frames = 0; AudioStreamBasicDescription asbd; AudioQueueProcessingTapRef tap_ref; OSStatus status = AudioQueueProcessingTapNew(queue_ref, tap_callback, tap_data_ptr, tap_flags, &max_frames, &asbd, &tap_ref); if (status != noErr) printf("Error while making Tap\n"); else printf("Successfully made tap\n"); } void tapper(void * tap_data, AudioQueueProcessingTapRef tap_ref, uint32_t number_of_frames_in, AudioTimeStamp * ts_ptr, AudioQueueProcessingTapFlags * tap_flags_ptr, uint32_t * number_of_frames_out_ptr, AudioBufferList * buf_list) { // Callback function for audio queue tap printf("Tap callback"); }``` Image of exception stack provided by Xcode: ![]("https://developer.apple.com/forums/content/attachment/27479e8d-a118-459b-aa2d-7e30528910e3" "title=Screenshot 2025-06-14 at 1.29.14 PM.png;width=932;height=562") What have I missed? Obtain the screen rotation direction in the background
I use replaykit for system-level screen recording. I want to determine whether the screen is in landscape mode by calling back CMSamplebuffer, but CMSamplebuffer does not come with this information. The other several apis related to obtaining the screen orientation are also restricted by the background. I want to know whether the information of the screen rotation direction can be obtained in real time in the background

About the built-in instrument sound of Apple devices
Does anyone know how to pronounce the sound of a specific instrument when you tap a button on the screen on your iPhone or iPad? Now, in the middle of creating a music learning app, I'm thinking of assigning monotones or chords to the button-like frames on the keyboard and fingerboard on the screen. Can it be achieved with SwiftUI chords alone? Once upon a time, MIDI level 1 I remember that there was a pronunciation function of the instrument, but I don't think about implementing the same function in the current OS. Please lend me your wisdom.

WideCamera consumes more CPU that telePhotoCamera
I have beet taking images from the iOS video camera feed and have encountered an issue. When you take images form the wideCamera this consumes about half the phone's CPU. The same is not the case when you take images from the telephotoCamera video stream. Is there a way of disabling the extra processing that is being done?

Mic audio before and after a call is answered
I have an app that records a health provider’s conversation with a patient. I am using Audio Queue Services for this. If a phone call comes in while recording, the doctor wants to be able to ignore the call and continue the conversation without touching the phone. If the doctor answers the call, that’s fine – I will stop the recording. I can detect when the call comes in and ends using CXCallObserver and AVAudioSession.interruptionNotification. Unfortunately, when a call comes in and before it is answered or dismissed, the audio is suppressed. After the call is dismissed, the audio continues to be suppressed. How can I continue to get audio from the mic as long as the user does not answer the phone call?

Wi-Fi Access Point Not Reconnecting While AVAudioSession Is Active
We’ve encountered a reproducible issue where the iPhone fails to reconnect to a Wi-Fi access point under the following conditions: The device is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. A Bluetooth audio accessory is connected (e.g. headset). AVAudioSession is active (such as during a voice call or when using the Voice Memos app). The user moves away from the access point, causing a disconnect. Upon returning within range, the access point is no longer recognized or reconnected while AVAudioSession remains active. However, if the Bluetooth device is disconnected or the AVAudioSession is deactivated, the Wi-Fi access point is immediately recognized again. We confirmed this behavior not only in my app but also using Apple's built-in Voice Memos app, suggesting this is not specific to our implementation. It appears that the Wi-Fi system deprioritizes reconnection while AVAudioSession is engaged. Could this be by design? Or is this a known issue or limitation with Wi-Fi and AVAudioSession interaction? Test Environment: Device: iPhone 13 mini iOS: 17.5.1 Wi-Fi: 2.4GHz band Accessories: Bluetooth headset We’d appreciate clarification on whether this is expected behavior or a bug. Thank you!

MusicKit - Skipping Forwards or Backwards does not update
Hello everyone, I am working on an app that allows you to review your own music using Apple Music. Currently I am running into an issue with the skipping forwards and backwards outside of the app. How it should work: When skipping forward or backwards on the lock or home screen of an iPhone, the next or previous song on an album should play and the information should change to reflect that in the app. If you play a song in Apple Music, you can see a Now Playing view in the lock screen. When you skip forward or backwards, it will do either action and it would reflect that when you see a little frequency icon on artwork image of a song. What it's doing: When skipping forward or backwards on the lock or home screen of an iPhone, the next or previous song is reflected outside of the app, but not in the app. When skipping a song outside of the app, it works correctly to head to the next song. But when I return to the app, it is not reflected NOTE: I am not using MusicKit variables such as Track, Album to display the songs. Since I want to grab the songs and review them I need a rating so I created my own that grabs the MusicItemID, name, artist(s), etc. NOTE: I am using ApplicationMusicPlayer.shared Is there a way to get the song to reflect in my app? (If its easier, a simple example of it would be nice. No need to create an entire xprod file)

Apple Music web player will not work on wkwebview web browser or electron chromium browser.
Hello, I'm trying to create a webbrowser but currently when signed into apple music webplayer I get the following message when I attempt to play on any versions of my webbrowser: Not available on the web You can listen to this in the Apple Music app. Is there a way to setup DRM (assuming this is the issue) with apple to allow my webbrowser to play this content? I believe Apple TV is also affected. Thank you ahead of time.

VTDecompressionSession consistently drops frames after sync frame
I'm seeking to a specific sync frame in a video file (HEVC, recorded on iPad). When I feed the buffers from that sync frame on to VTDecompressionSession it consistently drops the 2.,3.,4. buffer with a kVTVideoDecoderReferenceMissingErr (or no error but no buffer on the simulator). If I feed all the buffers from the penultimate sync frame prior to the desired frame the buffers come out fine but that would just create a massive overhead to always do it. Tried multiple OS versions, devices etc. Seems a consistent problem. Here's a sample project with the offending video (disregard memory handling etc): https://github.com/marcuseckert/vtSample I've filed a radar FB18228296 but would appreciate any feedback on circumventing or at least detecting this behavior prior to decoding.

AVPlayerViewController crashes
I have a crash related to playing video in AVPlayerViewController and AVQueuePlayer. I download the video locally from the network and then initialize it using AVAsset and AVPlayerItem. [CoreImage] OS 26 breaks Metal kernels for CIFilters
I maintain a couple of CoreImage libraries that provide custom Metal kernel backed CIFilters. In iOS/iPadOS 26, the CIColorKernel.apply() method invoked in the CIFilter subclass fails to add the coreimage::destination parameter to the Metal function call: -[CIColorKernel applyWithExtent:arguments:options:] argument count mismatch for kernel 'FractalNoise3D', expected 13 but saw 12. I've compiled the code with Xcode 26 and deployed to iOS 18 devices without any breakage, so this is definitely an iOS problem, not an Xcode problem. AsyncPublisher for AVPlayerItem not working
Hello, I'm trying to subscribe to AVPlayerItem status updates using Combine and it's bridge to Swift Concurrency – .values. This is my sample code. struct ContentView: View { @State var player: AVPlayer? @State var loaded = false var body: some View { VStack { if let player { Text("loading status: \(loaded)") Spacer() VideoPlayer(player: player) Button("Load") { Task { let item = AVPlayerItem( url: URL(string: "https://sample-videos.com/video321/mp4/360/big_buck_bunny_360p_5mb.mp4")! ) player.replaceCurrentItem(with: item) let publisher = player.publisher(for: \.status) for await status in publisher.values { print(status.rawValue) if status == .readyToPlay { loaded = true break } } print("we are out") } } } else { Text("No video selected") } } .task { player = AVPlayer() } } } After I click on the "load" button it prints out 0 (as the initial status of .unknown) and nothing after – even when the video is fully loaded. At the same time this works as expected (loading status is set to true): struct ContentView: View { @State var player: AVPlayer? @State var loaded = false @State var cancellable: AnyCancellable? var body: some View { VStack { if let player { Text("loading status: \(loaded)") Spacer() VideoPlayer(player: player) Button("Load") { Task { let item = AVPlayerItem( url: URL(string: "https://sample-videos.com/video321/mp4/360/big_buck_bunny_360p_5mb.mp4")! ) player.replaceCurrentItem(with: item) let stream = AsyncStream { continuation in cancellable = item.publisher(for: \.status) .sink { if $0 == .readyToPlay { continuation.yield($0) continuation.finish() } } } for await _ in stream { loaded = true cancellable?.cancel() cancellable = nil break } } } } else { Text("No video selected") } } .task { player = AVPlayer() } } } Is this a bug or something?

AVCaptureSession video and audio out of sync
I'm using an AVCaptureSession to send video and audio samples to an AVAssetWriter. When I play back the resultant video, sometimes there is a significant lag between the audio compared with the video, so they're just not in sync. But sometimes they are, with the same code. If I look at the very first presentation time stamps of the buffers being sent to the delegate, via func captureOutput(_: AVCaptureOutput, didOutput sampleBuffer: CMSampleBuffer, from connection: AVCaptureConnection) I see something like this: Adding audio samples for pts time 227711.0855328798, Adding video samples for pts time 227710.778785374 That is, the clock for audio vs video is behind: the first audio sample I receive is at 11.08 something, while the video video sample is earlier in time, at 10.778 something. The times are the presentation time stamps of the buffer, and the outputPresentationTimeStamp is the exact same number. It feels like "video" vs the "audio" clock are just mismatched. This doesn't always happen: sometimes they're synced. Sometimes they're not. Any ideas? The device I'm recording is a webcam, on iPadOS, connected via the usb-c port.

Is Call Translation API available for VOIP?
I might have misunderstood the docs, but is Call Translation going to be available for VOIP applications? Eg in an already connected VOIP call, would it be possible for Call Translations to be enabled on an iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence supported device? I have personally tried it and it doesn’t look like it supported VOIP but would love to confirm this. reference: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/callkit/cxsettranslatingcallaction/

Format of 14-bit RAW bayer data from lower bit camera sensor?
I'm working on an application that uses the iPhone camera for scientific purposes - and, as a result would like to receive sensor data in as unprocessed format as possible. I'm using AVCapturePhotoOutput to take Bayer RAW stills and receiving data in kCVPixelFormatType_14Bayer_RGGB format. However, I'm puzzled as to the content of the bits. I simply demosaic the image by taking each 2x2 square: RG GB and use R, (G+G)/2, B to get 16-bit RGB values - and this indeed works. However, I am puzzled as to the values we are getting as they seem to be approximately in the range 2048 - 16383. The top value is understandable - the maximum that you can fit in 14-bits (as implied by the pixel format type). However we don't seem to be able to get lower than ~2048 no matter how black/dark we make the sensor. I'm aware that the sensor is probably not 14-bits (we're using the iPhone 16e camera) and that maybe this is to do with the way the sensor data is packaged. The Advances in iOS Photography video (https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2016/501/) describes it as "10-bit sensor RAW packaged in 14 bits per pixel instead of eight." Is there any documentation describing what is going on here? It's vital for our use that we get as close to the raw camera sensor light readings as possible, so any pointers as to the mapping (e.g. decompanding?) being used would be extremely useful. Many thanks in advance for your help.

Creating RTP-MIDI Sessions via MIDINetworkSession C API (dlopen/dlsym) on macOS 15?
I’m an amateur developer working on a free utility for composers/producers, for which the macOS release needs to create and name RTP-MIDI sessions in Audio MIDI Setup from the command line (so I can ship a small C helper instead of telling users to click through the UI). Here’s what I’ve tried so far, without luck: • Plist hacks: Injecting entries into ~/Library/Audio/MIDI Configurations/*.mcfg works when AMS is closed, but AMS immediately locks and reverts my changes when it’s open. • CoreMIDI C API: I can create virtual ports with MIDISourceCreate, but attempting MIDIObjectGetDataProperty on the apple.midirtp.session plugin always returns err –10836. • Obj-C & Swift: Loading MIDINetworkSession and calling defaultSession, init, setNetworkName: and setting enabled = YES doesn’t produce a new session object in the Network panel. • dlopen/dlsym: I extracted the real CoreMIDI binary out of the dyld shared cache and tried binding _MIDINetworkSessionCreate, _SetName, _SetEnabled, etc., but all the symbols come back null or my tool segfaults. • Plugin registration: I’ve pulled the factory UUID (70C9C5EA-7C65-11D8-B317-000393A34B5A) from /System/Library/Extensions/AppleMIDIRTPDriver.plugin/Contents/Info.plist and called CFPlugInRegisterFactories, but it still never exposes the session-creation calls. At this point I’m convinced I’m either loading the wrong binary or missing one critical step in registering the RTP-MIDI plugin’s private API. Can anyone point me to: The exact path of the dylib or bundle that actually exports the MIDINetworkSessionCreate/MIDINetworkSessionSetName/MIDINetworkSessionSetEnabled symbols? A minimal working snippet (C or Obj-C) that reliably creates and names a Network-MIDI session? Any pointers, sample code, or even ideas about where Apple hides this functionality on macOS 15 would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Application tones start when I get incoming call or message
I've got a problem with my app where I'm testing it on my own phone. I'm using audio kit to generate tones as part of the app. Everything seems to work fine. Sounds start, Stop, etc. They play when the app is closed and when the phone is locked, so background is working. However, I'm seeing an issue where, even when STOP is pressed and the application exited, if I get a notification such as a text message, the base tone for the app starts to play. If I then open the app, check the Start/Stop button - it says start so that. hasnt' been activated. If I click Start, then a 2nd tone starts. This one stops with the Stop button. However the original tone that was set off by an incoming message carries on playing. Until I go to the Open Apps View on the phone and slide the application upwards. For the life of me, I can't figure out whats happening here.

Can't reproduce locally, but crashes occur from firebase crashlytics only for users starting with iOS 18.4.0 with this trace: Crashed: com.apple.avkit.playerControllerBackgroundQueue 0 libobjc.A.dylib 0x1458 objc_retain + 16 1 libobjc.A.dylib 0x1458 objc_retain_x0 + 16 2 AVKit 0x12afdc __77-[AVPlayerController currentEnabledAssetTrackForMediaType:completionHandler:]_block_invoke + 108 3 libdispatch.dylib 0x1aac _dispatch_call_block_and_release + 32 4 libdispatch.dylib 0x1b584 _dispatch_client_callout + 16 5 libdispatch.dylib 0x6560 _dispatch_continuation_pop + 596 6 libdispatch.dylib 0x5bd4 _dispatch_async_redirect_invoke + 580 7 libdispatch.dylib 0x13db0 _dispatch_root_queue_drain + 364 8 libdispatch.dylib 0x1454c _dispatch_worker_thread2 + 156 9 libsystem_pthread.dylib 0x4624 _pthread_wqthread + 232 10 libsystem_pthread.dylib 0x19f8 start_wqthread + 8

Why is MusicKit ApplicationMusicPlayer not available on watchOS?
ApplicationMusicPlayer is not available on watchOS but all other platforms. Is there a technical reason for that like battery life? Same goes for SystemMusicPlayer and MPMusicPlayerController. I already filed feedbacks for that.
