Xcode 26.1 / OS 26.1 regression with schema and macros
After Xcode 26.1 was updated and installing the OS 26.1 simulators, my app started crashing related to transformable properties. When I checked my schema, I noticed that properties with array collection types are suddenly set with an option transformable with Optional("NSSecureUnarchiveFromData")], even though I do not use any transformable types. I verified the macros, no transformable was specified. This is causing ModelCoders to encode/decode my properties incorrectly. This is not an issue when I switch back to OS 26.0 simulators.

How to switch between Core Data Persistent Stores?
What is the best way to switch between Core Data Persistent Stores? My use case is that I have a multi-user app that stores thousands of data items unique to each user. To me, having Persistent Stores for each user seems like the best design to keep their data separate and private. (If anyone believes that storing the data for all users in one Persistent Store is a better design, I'd appreciate hearing from them.) Customers might switch users 5 to 10 times a day. Switching users must be fast, say a second or two at most.

How is Record Zone Sharing done?
My use case is the following: Every user of my app can create as an owner a set of items.  These items are private until the owner invites other users to share all of them as participant. The participants can modify the shared items and/or add other items. So, sharing is not done related to individual items, but to all items of an owner. I want to use CoreData & CloudKit to have local copies of private and shared items. To my understanding, CoreData & CloudKit puts all mirrored items in a special zone „com.apple.coredata.cloudkit.zone“. So, this zone should be shared, i.e. all items in it. In the video it is said that NSPersistentCloudKitContainer uses Record Zone Sharing optionally in contrast to hierarchically record sharing using a root record. But how is this done? Maybe I can declare zone „com.apple.coredata.cloudkit.zone“ as a shared zone?

CoreData not documented UserInfo Notification
Hello, the last days I was trying to solve a bug in my Unit Tests related to the CoreData "NSManagedObjectContextObjectsDidChange" Notification. Im using some kind of Notification handler to save and abstract that for the UI and while the tests are running this notification was triggered with objects that doesn't exists anymore, which has resulted in a crash. After some debugging I have detected, that the objects in here are really old. The objects here was from few tests ago, where a Merge Conflict happened. In the meantime there was a plenty of resets and deletes of the whole db. I have also seen that the bad notification is the first in the stack trace of the main thread, which is in my opinion also not usual. So the real question is: The only difference what I have found for the bad notification to the real notification, was the existence of the key "NSObjectsChangedByMergeChangesKey" in the UserInfo dictionary of the ObjectsDidChange Notification. But this key is nowhere found in the documentation of Apple. Also the search engines does not produce any result. So what is this key and when is this key contained in this notification and when not? Maybe if I understand this, it helps me to understand the overall issue ...

@ModelActor with default actor isolation = MainActor
If I set my build settings "default actor isolation" to MainActor, how do my @ModelActor actors and model classes need to look like ? For now, I am creating instances of my @ModelActor actors and passing my modelContext container and processing all data there. Everything stays in this context. No models are transferred back to MainActor. Now, after changing my project settings, I am getting a huge amount of warnings. Do I need to set all my model classes to non-isolated and the @ModelActor actor as well? Is there any new sample code to cover this topic ... did not find anything for now. Thanks in advance, Marc

SwiftUI Sheet view with @Query loses model context
I've run into a strange issue. If a sheet loads a view that has a SwiftData @Query, and there is an if statement in the view body, I get the following error when running an iOS targetted SwiftUI app under MacOS 26.1: Set a .modelContext in view's environment to use Query While the view actually ends up loading the correct data, before it does, it ends up re-creating the sqlite store (opening as /dev/null). The strange thing is that this only happens if there is an if statement in the body. The statement need not ever evaluate true, but it causes the issue. Here's an example. Flipping on -com.apple.CoreData.SQLDebug 1 will show it trying to recreate the database. If you remove the if fault { Text("Fault!") } line, it goes away. It also doesn't appear to happen on iPhones or in the iPhone simulator. Explicitly passing modelContext to the ContentSheetView like ContentSheetView().modelContext(modelContext) also seems to fix it. Is this behavior expected?

SwiftData - disable Persistent History Tracking
Hello, I am building a pretty large database (~40MB) to be used in my SwiftData iOS app as read-only. While inserting and updating the data, I noticed a substantial increase in size (+ ~10MB). A little digging pointed to ACHANGE and ATRANSACTION tables that apparently are dealing with Persistent History Tracking. While I do appreciate the benefits of that, I prefer to save space. Could you please point me in the right direction?

CKShare in iOS 26
I have an app that uses CKShare to allow users to share CloudKit data with other users. With the first build of the iOS 26, I'm seeing a few issues: I'm not able to add myself as a participant anymore when I have the link to a document. Some participants names no longer show up in the app. Looking at the release notes for iOS & iPadOS 26 Beta, there is a CloudKit section with two bullets: CloudKit sharing URLs do not launch third-party apps. (151778655) The request access APIs, such as CKShareRequestAccessOperation, are available in the SDK but are currently nonfunctional. (151878020) It sounds like the first issue is addressed by the first bullet, although the error message makes me wonder if I need to make changes to my iCloud account permissions or something in order to open it. It works fine in iOS 18.5. This is the error I get when I try to open a link to a shared document (I blocked out my email address, which is what was in quotes): As far as the second issue, I am really confused about what is going on. Some names still show up, while others do not. I can't find a pattern, and the missing users are not on the iOS 26 beta. The release notes mention CKShareRequestAccessOperation being nonfunctional, which is new in the beta and has some minor documentation, but I can't find information about how it's supposed to be used yet. In previous years there have been WWDC sessions about what's new in CloudKit, but I haven't found anything that talks about these changes to document sharing. Is there a guide or session somewhere that I'm missing? Does anyone know what's going on with these changes to CloudKit?

SwiftData and CloudKit
Recently I've been working on a demo project called iLibrary. The main goal was to learn more about CloudKit and SwiftData. After a while I noticed that there were some hangs/freezes when running the app in debug mode. I first tried this with Xcode 15.4 and iOS 17.5. Here the hang only appears at the beginning, but only for a few seconds. But when I exit debug mode, there are no more hangs. With Xcode 16 beta 4 and iOS 18 it looks completely different. In this case, the hangs and freezes are always present, whether in debug mode or not. And it's not just at the beginning, it's throughout the app. I'm aware that this is still a beta, but I still find this weird. And when I profile this I see that the main thread gets quite overloaded. Interestingly, my app doesn't have that many operations going on. So I guess something with the sync of SwiftData or my CloudKitManger where I fetch some records from the public database is not running fine. Lastly, I wanted to delete the iCloud app data. So I went to Settings and tried to delete it, but it didn't work. Is this normal? Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Or has anyone encountered this problem as well? Core Data, Swift 6, Concurrency and more
I have the following struct doing some simple tasks, running a network request and then saving items to Core Data. Per Xcode 26's new default settings (onisolated(nonsending) & defaultIsolation set to MainActor), the struct and its functions run on the main actor, which works fine and I can even safely omit the context.perform call because of it, which is great. struct DataHandler { func importGames(withIDs ids: [Int]) async throws { ... let context = PersistenceController.shared.container.viewContext for game in games { let newGame = GYGame(context: context) newGame.id = UUID() } try context.save() } } Now, I want to run this in a background thread to increase performance and responsiveness. So I followed this session (https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2025/270) and believe the solution is to mark the struct as nonisolated and the function itself as @concurrent. The function now works on a background thread, but I receive a crash: _dispatch_assert_queue_fail. This happens whether I wrap the Core Data calls with context.perform or not. Alongside that I get a few new warnings which I have no idea how to work around. So, what am I doing wrong here? What's the correct way to solve this simple use case with Swift 6's new concurrency stuff and the default main actor isolation in Xcode 26? Core Data complaining about store being opened without persistent history tracking... but I don't think that it has been
Since running on iOS 14b1, I'm getting this in my log (I have Core Data logging enabled): error: Store opened without NSPersistentHistoryTrackingKey but previously had been opened with NSPersistentHistoryTrackingKey - Forcing into Read Only mode store at 'file:///private/var/mobile/Containers/Shared/AppGroup/415B75A6-92C3-45FE-BE13-7D48D35909AF/StoreFile.sqlite' As far as I can tell, it's impossible to open my store without that key set - it's in the init() of my NSPersistentContainer subclass, before anyone calls it to load stores. Any ideas?

NSPersistentCloudkitContainer Memory Leak -> Crash? (iOS 15 beta 4 & 5)
Background I have an established app in the App Store which has been using NSPersistentCloudkitContainer since iOS 13 without any issues. I've been running my app normally on an iOS device running the iOS 15 betas, mainly to see problems arise before my users see them. Ever since iOS 15 (beta 4) my app has failed to sync changes - no matter how small the change. An upload 'starts' but never completes. After a minute or so the app quits to the Home Screen and no useful information can be gleaned from crash reports. Until now I've had no idea what's going on. Possible Bug in the API? I've managed to replicate this behaviour on the simulator and on another device when building my app with Xcode 13 (beta 5) on iOS 15 (beta 5). It appears that NSPersistentCloudkitContainer has a memory leak and keeps ramping up the RAM consumption (and CPU at 100%) until the operating system kills the app. No code of mine is running. I'm not really an expert on these things and I tried to use Instruments to see if that would show me anything. It appears to be related to NSCloudkitMirroringDelegate getting 'stuck' somehow but I have no idea what to do with this information. My Core Data database is not tiny, but not massive by any means and NSPersistentCloudkitContainer has had no problems syncing to iCloud prior to iOS 15 (beta 4). If I restore my App Data (from an external backup file - 700MB with lots of many-many, many-one relationships, ckAssets, etc.) the data all gets added to Core Data without an issue at all. The console log (see below) then shows that a sync is created, scheduled & then started... but no data is uploaded. At this point the memory consumption starts and all I see is 'backgroundTask' warnings appear (only related to CloudKit) with no code of mine running. Swift Data Predicate Evaluation Crashes in Release Build When Generics Used
I'm using Swift Data for an app that requires iOS 18. All of my models conform to a protocol that guarantees they have a 'serverID' String variable. I wrote a function that would allow me to pass in a serverID String and have it fetch the model object that matched. Because I am lazy and don't like writing the same functions over and over, I used a Self reference so that all of my conforming models get this static function. Imagine my model is called "WhatsNew". Tested on iOS 18.0 and 18.1 beta. How can I resolve this? I have two dozen types that conform to this protocol. I could manually specialize this function for every type myself but... ugh.

Fetching data with relationships directly faults the relationships even when not accessed
I am using SwiftData to model my data. For that i created a model called OrganizationData that contains various relationships to other entities. My data set is quite large and i am having a big performance issue when fetching all OrganizationData entities. I started debugging and looking at the sql debug log i noticed that when fetching my entities i run into faults for all relationships even when not accessing them. Fetching my entities: let fetchDescriptor = FetchDescriptor<OrganizationData>() let context = MapperContext(dataManager: self) let organizations = (try modelContainer.mainContext.fetch(fetchDescriptor)) Doing this fetch, also fetches all relationships. Each in a single query, for every OrganizationData entity. As far as i understood relationships are lazy and should only be faulted when accessing the property. But doing the fetch as described above already causes a query to happen, making the fetch take very long when using a large data set.

CloudKit it writes to development container, not Production
I have an app that I signed and distribute between some internal testflight users. Potentially I want to invite some 'Public' beta testers which don't need to validate (_World have read rights in the public database) Question: Do I need to have a working public CloudKit , when users are invited through TestFlight, or are they going to test on the development container? I understand that when I invite beta-tester without authorization (external testers) they cannot access the developer container, so therefore I need to have the production CloudKit container up and running. I have tried to populate the public production container, but for whatever reason my upload app still goes to the development container. I have archived the app, and tried, but no luck. I let xcode manage my certificates/profiles. but what do I need to change to be able to use my upload file to upload the production container, instead of the development. I tried: init() { container = CKContainer(identifier: "iCloud.com.xxxx.xxxx") publicDB = container.publicCloudDatabase I got no error in the console, but data is always populated to the development database, instead the production. I tried to create a provisioning profile, but for some reason Xcode doesn't like it. Tried to create one a different provisioning profile manual through the developer portal, for the app. but xcode doesn't want to use that, and mentions that the requirement are already in place. What can I check/do to solve this.

(If anyone believes that storing the data for all users in one Persistent Store is a better design, I'd appreciate hearing from them.) Customers might switch users 5 to 10 times a day. Switching users must be fast, say a second or two at most.

SwiftData Migration: Why no explicit ETL?
When I used to do Migrations, I always used ETL and then push to a dev system to review/test before going production. The migration support is SwiftData is fine for a little tweak. I might as well just just use new schema and context and write the custom code than use the SwiftData migration support.

How is Record Zone Sharing done?
My use case is the following: Every user of my app can create as an owner a set of items.  These items are private until the owner invites other users to share all of them as participant. The participants can modify the shared items and/or add other items. So, sharing is not done related to individual items, but to all items of an owner. I want to use CoreData & CloudKit to have local copies of private and shared items. To my understanding, CoreData & CloudKit puts all mirrored items in a special zone „com.apple.coredata.cloudkit.zone“. So, this zone should be shared, i.e. all items in it. In the video it is said that NSPersistentCloudKitContainer uses Record Zone Sharing optionally in contrast to hierarchically record sharing using a root record. But how is this done? Maybe I can declare zone „com.apple.coredata.cloudkit.zone“ as a shared zone?

CoreData not documented UserInfo Notification
Hello, the last days I was trying to solve a bug in my Unit Tests related to the CoreData "NSManagedObjectContextObjectsDidChange" Notification. Im using some kind of Notification handler to save and abstract that for the UI and while the tests are running this notification was triggered with objects that doesn't exists anymore, which has resulted in a crash. After some debugging I have detected, that the objects in here are really old. The objects here was from few tests ago, where a Merge Conflict happened. In the meantime there was a plenty of resets and deletes of the whole db. I have also seen that the bad notification is the first in the stack trace of the main thread, which is in my opinion also not usual. So the real question is: The only difference what I have found for the bad notification to the real notification, was the existence of the key "NSObjectsChangedByMergeChangesKey" in the UserInfo dictionary of the ObjectsDidChange Notification. But this key is nowhere found in the documentation of Apple. Also the search engines does not produce any result. So what is this key and when is this key contained in this notification and when not? Maybe if I understand this, it helps me to understand the overall issue ...

@ModelActor with default actor isolation = MainActor
If I set my build settings "default actor isolation" to MainActor, how do my @ModelActor actors and model classes need to look like ? For now, I am creating instances of my @ModelActor actors and passing my modelContext container and processing all data there. Everything stays in this context. No models are transferred back to MainActor. Now, after changing my project settings, I am getting a huge amount of warnings. Do I need to set all my model classes to non-isolated and the @ModelActor actor as well? Is there any new sample code to cover this topic ... did not find anything for now. Thanks in advance, Marc

SwiftUI Sheet view with @Query loses model context
I've run into a strange issue. If a sheet loads a view that has a SwiftData @Query, and there is an if statement in the view body, I get the following error when running an iOS targetted SwiftUI app under MacOS 26.1: Set a .modelContext in view's environment to use Query While the view actually ends up loading the correct data, before it does, it ends up re-creating the sqlite store (opening as /dev/null). The strange thing is that this only happens if there is an if statement in the body. The statement need not ever evaluate true, but it causes the issue. Here's an example. Flipping on -com.apple.CoreData.SQLDebug 1 will show it trying to recreate the database. If you remove the if fault { Text("Fault!") } line, it goes away. It also doesn't appear to happen on iPhones or in the iPhone simulator. Explicitly passing modelContext to the ContentSheetView like ContentSheetView().modelContext(modelContext) also seems to fix it. Is this behavior expected?

SwiftData - disable Persistent History Tracking
Hello, I am building a pretty large database (~40MB) to be used in my SwiftData iOS app as read-only. While inserting and updating the data, I noticed a substantial increase in size (+ ~10MB). A little digging pointed to ACHANGE and ATRANSACTION tables that apparently are dealing with Persistent History Tracking. While I do appreciate the benefits of that, I prefer to save space. Could you please point me in the right direction?

it seems that is going to the appstore to find the app to execute the share but my app is not in the appstore yet. I am using a sandboxed user and a non sandboxed user, I have tried real phones connected to xcode and simulator same effect, looking for how to test my ckshare in testflight thanks

I have an app that uses CKShare to allow users to share CloudKit data with other users. With the first build of the iOS 26, I'm seeing a few issues: I'm not able to add myself as a participant anymore when I have the link to a document. Some participants names no longer show up in the app. Looking at the release notes for iOS & iPadOS 26 Beta, there is a CloudKit section with two bullets: CloudKit sharing URLs do not launch third-party apps. (151778655) The request access APIs, such as CKShareRequestAccessOperation, are available in the SDK but are currently nonfunctional. (151878020) It sounds like the first issue is addressed by the first bullet, although the error message makes me wonder if I need to make changes to my iCloud account permissions or something in order to open it. It works fine in iOS 18.5. This is the error I get when I try to open a link to a shared document (I blocked out my email address, which is what was in quotes): As far as the second issue, I am really confused about what is going on. Some names still show up, while others do not. I can't find a pattern, and the missing users are not on the iOS 26 beta. The release notes mention CKShareRequestAccessOperation being nonfunctional, which is new in the beta and has some minor documentation, but I can't find information about how it's supposed to be used yet. In previous years there have been WWDC sessions about what's new in CloudKit, but I haven't found anything that talks about these changes to document sharing. Is there a guide or session somewhere that I'm missing? Does anyone know what's going on with these changes to CloudKit?

iOS26.1 crashing all my live SwiftData Apps 😡
Apple WTF? What did you do to all my Apps? none of them work in iOS26.1 (all worked in 26.0). XCode simply says: CoreData: error: addPersistentStoreWithType:configuration:URL:options:error: returned error NSCocoaErrorDomain (134140) * SwiftData is supposed to do all these automatically 🤷🏻

SwiftData and CloudKit
Recently I've been working on a demo project called iLibrary. The main goal was to learn more about CloudKit and SwiftData. After a while I noticed that there were some hangs/freezes when running the app in debug mode. I first tried this with Xcode 15.4 and iOS 17.5. Here the hang only appears at the beginning, but only for a few seconds. But when I exit debug mode, there are no more hangs. With Xcode 16 beta 4 and iOS 18 it looks completely different. In this case, the hangs and freezes are always present, whether in debug mode or not. And it's not just at the beginning, it's throughout the app. I'm aware that this is still a beta, but I still find this weird. And when I profile this I see that the main thread gets quite overloaded. Interestingly, my app doesn't have that many operations going on. So I guess something with the sync of SwiftData or my CloudKitManger where I fetch some records from the public database is not running fine. Lastly, I wanted to delete the iCloud app data. So I went to Settings and tried to delete it, but it didn't work. Is this normal? Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Or has anyone encountered this problem as well? Core Data, Swift 6, Concurrency and more
I have the following struct doing some simple tasks, running a network request and then saving items to Core Data. Per Xcode 26's new default settings (onisolated(nonsending) & defaultIsolation set to MainActor), the struct and its functions run on the main actor, which works fine and I can even safely omit the context.perform call because of it, which is great. struct DataHandler { func importGames(withIDs ids: [Int]) async throws { ... let context = PersistenceController.shared.container.viewContext for game in games { let newGame = GYGame(context: context) newGame.id = UUID() } try context.save() } } Now, I want to run this in a background thread to increase performance and responsiveness. So I followed this session (https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2025/270) and believe the solution is to mark the struct as nonisolated and the function itself as @concurrent. The function now works on a background thread, but I receive a crash: _dispatch_assert_queue_fail. This happens whether I wrap the Core Data calls with context.perform or not. Alongside that I get a few new warnings which I have no idea how to work around. So, what am I doing wrong here? What's the correct way to solve this simple use case with Swift 6's new concurrency stuff and the default main actor isolation in Xcode 26? Core Data complaining about store being opened without persistent history tracking... but I don't think that it has been
Since running on iOS 14b1, I'm getting this in my log (I have Core Data logging enabled): error: Store opened without NSPersistentHistoryTrackingKey but previously had been opened with NSPersistentHistoryTrackingKey - Forcing into Read Only mode store at 'file:///private/var/mobile/Containers/Shared/AppGroup/415B75A6-92C3-45FE-BE13-7D48D35909AF/StoreFile.sqlite' As far as I can tell, it's impossible to open my store without that key set - it's in the init() of my NSPersistentContainer subclass, before anyone calls it to load stores. Any ideas?

NSPersistentCloudkitContainer Memory Leak -> Crash? (iOS 15 beta 4 & 5)
Background I have an established app in the App Store which has been using NSPersistentCloudkitContainer since iOS 13 without any issues. I've been running my app normally on an iOS device running the iOS 15 betas, mainly to see problems arise before my users see them. Ever since iOS 15 (beta 4) my app has failed to sync changes - no matter how small the change. An upload 'starts' but never completes. After a minute or so the app quits to the Home Screen and no useful information can be gleaned from crash reports. Until now I've had no idea what's going on. Possible Bug in the API? I've managed to replicate this behaviour on the simulator and on another device when building my app with Xcode 13 (beta 5) on iOS 15 (beta 5). It appears that NSPersistentCloudkitContainer has a memory leak and keeps ramping up the RAM consumption (and CPU at 100%) until the operating system kills the app. No code of mine is running. I'm not really an expert on these things and I tried to use Instruments to see if that would show me anything. It appears to be related to NSCloudkitMirroringDelegate getting 'stuck' somehow but I have no idea what to do with this information. My Core Data database is not tiny, but not massive by any means and NSPersistentCloudkitContainer has had no problems syncing to iCloud prior to iOS 15 (beta 4). If I restore my App Data (from an external backup file - 700MB with lots of many-many, many-one relationships, ckAssets, etc.) the data all gets added to Core Data without an issue at all. The console log (see below) then shows that a sync is created, scheduled & then started... but no data is uploaded. At this point the memory consumption starts and all I see is 'backgroundTask' warnings appear (only related to CloudKit) with no code of mine running. Swift Data Predicate Evaluation Crashes in Release Build When Generics Used
I'm using Swift Data for an app that requires iOS 18. All of my models conform to a protocol that guarantees they have a 'serverID' String variable. I wrote a function that would allow me to pass in a serverID String and have it fetch the model object that matched. Because I am lazy and don't like writing the same functions over and over, I used a Self reference so that all of my conforming models get this static function. Imagine my model is called "WhatsNew". Fetching data with relationships directly faults the relationships even when not accessed
I am using SwiftData to model my data. For that i created a model called OrganizationData that contains various relationships to other entities. My data set is quite large and i am having a big performance issue when fetching all OrganizationData entities. I started debugging and looking at the sql debug log i noticed that when fetching my entities i run into faults for all relationships even when not accessing them. Fetching my entities: let fetchDescriptor = FetchDescriptor<OrganizationData>() let context = MapperContext(dataManager: self) let organizations = (try modelContainer.mainContext.fetch(fetchDescriptor)) Doing this fetch, also fetches all relationships. Each in a single query, for every OrganizationData entity. As far as i understood relationships are lazy and should only be faulted when accessing the property. But doing the fetch as described above already causes a query to happen, making the fetch take very long when using a large data set.

CloudKit it writes to development container, not Production
I have an app that I signed and distribute between some internal testflight users. Potentially I want to invite some 'Public' beta testers which don't need to validate (_World have read rights in the public database) Question: Do I need to have a working public CloudKit , when users are invited through TestFlight, or are they going to test on the development container? I understand that when I invite beta-tester without authorization (external testers) they cannot access the developer container, so therefore I need to have the production CloudKit container up and running. I have tried to populate the public production container, but for whatever reason my upload app still goes to the development container. I have archived the app, and tried, but no luck. I let xcode manage my certificates/profiles. but what do I need to change to be able to use my upload file to upload the production container, instead of the development. I tried: init() { container = CKContainer(identifier: "iCloud.com.xxxx.xxxx") publicDB = container.publicCloudDatabase I got no error in the console, but data is always populated to the development database, instead the production. I tried to create a provisioning profile, but for some reason Xcode doesn't like it. Tried to create one a different provisioning profile manual through the developer portal, for the app. but xcode doesn't want to use that, and mentions that the requirement are already in place. What can I check/do to solve this.
