Issue with SwiftData inheritance
Every time I insert a subclass (MYShapeLayer) into the model context, the app crashes with an error: DesignerPlayground crashed due to fatalError in BackingData.swift at line 908. Default zone is not accessible in shared DB - cloudKit
I am trying to save to cloud kit shared database. The shared database does not allow zones to be set up. Best Practices for Using CKAssets in Public CloudKit Database for Social Features
Hello Apple Team, We are looking at developing an iOS feature on our current development that stores user-generated images as CKAssets in the public CloudKit database, with access control enforced by our app’s own logic (not CloudKit Sharing as that has a limit of 100 shares per device). Each story or post is a public record, and users only see content based on buddy relationships handled within the app. We’d like to confirm that this pattern is consistent with Apple’s best practices for social features. Specifically: Is it acceptable to store user-uploaded CKAssets in the public CloudKit database, as long as access visibility is enforced by the app? Are there any performance or quota limitations (e.g., storage, bandwidth, or user sync limits) that apply to CKAssets in the public database when used at scale? Would CloudKit Sharing be recommended instead, even if we don’t require user-to-user sharing invitations? For App Review, is this model (public CKAssets + app-enforced access control) compliant with Apple’s data and security expectations? Are there any caching or bandwidth optimization guidelines for handling image-heavy public CKAsset data in CloudKit? Thanks again for your time

Core Data: Main actor-isolated property can not be mutated from a Sendable closure
I'm running a project with these settings: Default Actor Isolation: MainActor Approachable Concurrency: Yes Strict Concurrency Checking: Complete (this issue does not appear on the other two modes) I receive a warning for this very simple use case. Can I actually fix anything about this or is this a case of Core Data not being entirely ready for this? In reference to this, there was a workaround listed in the release notes of iOS 26 beta 5 (https://forums.swift.org/t/defaultisolation-mainactor-and-core-data-background-tasks/80569/22). Does this still apply as the only fix for this? This is a simplified sample meant to run on a background context. Error - Never access a full future backing data
Hi, I am building an iOS app with SwiftUI and SwiftData for the first time and I am experiencing a lot of difficulty with this error: Thread 44: Fatal error: Never access a full future backing data - PersistentIdentifier(id: SwiftData.PersistentIdentifier.ID(backing: SwiftData.PersistentIdentifier.PersistentIdentifierBacking.managedObjectID(<ID> <x-coredata://<UUID>/MySwiftDataModel/p1>)), backing: SwiftData.PersistentIdentifier.PersistentIdentifierBacking.managedObjectID(<ID> <x-coredata://<UUID>/MySwiftDataModel/p1>)) with Optional(<UUID>) I have been trying to figure out what the problem is, but unfortunately I cannot find any information in the documentation or on other sources online. My only theory about this error is that it is somehow related to fetching an entity that has been created in-memory, but not yet saved to the modelContext in SwiftData. However, when I am trying to debug this, it's not clear this is the case. Sometimes the error happens, sometimes it doesn't. Saving manually does not always solve the error. Therefore, it would be extremely helpful if someone could explain what this error means and whether there are any best practices to do with SwiftData, or some pitfalls to avoid (such as wrapping my model context into a repository class). To be clear, this problem is NOT related to one area of my code, it happens throughout my app, at unpredictable places and time. Given that there is very little information related to this error, I am at a loss at how to make sure that this never happens. This question has been asked on the forum here as well as on StackOverflow, Reddit (can't link that here), but none of the answers worked for me. As I said, the error surfaces at different times - sometimes during assignments, a lot of times during deletions of related models, etc. Could you please explain what I am doing wrong and how I can make sure that this error does not happen? What are the architectural patterns that work best for SwiftData in this case? Do you have any examples of things I should avoid? Thanks

Increase Background Asset Limitations
Hello, From the documentation linked below, the limitations for Background Assets are the following: Size Limit: 200 GB Asset Pack Count: 100 I'm expecting I will need ~175 Asset Packs and around 500GB of storage. I understand Background Assets is a new, but is there a process or a potential that these limits will be increased in the future? Or is there a way to request an increase? I've tried contacting Apple Support as this is more of an Admin issue, however they've directed me here. SwiftData and CloudKit not synching between devices
Hi, Not sure how to describe my issue best: I am using SwiftData and CloudKit to store my data. In the past, when I tested my app on different devices, the data would sync between the devices automatically. For whatever reason this has stopped now and the data no longer syncs. No matter what I do, it feels as if all the data is actually stored just locally on each device. How can I check if the data is actually stored in the cloud and what could be reasons, why its no longer synching between my devices (and yes, I am logged in with the same Apple ID on all devices). I have used core data before via the model editor. This is the first time I'm using swift data and that too with CloudKit. Can you tell me if the following model classes are correct? I have an expense which can have only one sub category which in turn belongs to a single category. In future versions I plan to query expenses even via category or sub category. I particularly doubt for the relationship i have set. should there be one from category to subcategory as well?

Correct SwiftData Concurrency Logic for UI and Extensions
Hi everyone, I'm looking for the correct architectural guidance for my SwiftData implementation. In my Swift project, I have dedicated async functions for adding, editing, and deleting each of my four models. I created these functions specifically to run certain logic whenever these operations occur. Since these functions are asynchronous, I call them from the UI (e.g., from a button press) by wrapping them in a Task. I've gone through three different approaches and am now stuck. Approach 1: @MainActor Functions Initially, my functions were marked with @MainActor and worked on the main ModelContext. This worked perfectly until I added support for App Intents and Widgets, which caused the app to crash with data race errors. Approach 2: Passing ModelContext as a Parameter To solve the crashes, I decided to have each function receive a ModelContext as a parameter. My SwiftUI views passed the main context (which they get from @Environment(\.modelContext)), while the App Intents and Widgets created and passed in their own private context. However, this approach still caused the app to crash sometimes due to data race errors, especially during actions triggered from the main UI. Approach 3: Creating a New Context in Each Function I moved to a third approach where each function creates its own ModelContext to work on. This has successfully stopped all crashes. However, now the UI actions don't always react or update. For example, when an object is added, deleted, or edited, the change isn't reflected in the UI. I suspect this is because the main context (driving the UI) hasn't been updated yet, or because the async function hasn't finished its work. My Question I'm not sure what to do or what the correct logic should be. How should I structure my data operations to support the main UI, Widgets, and App Intents without causing crashes or UI update failures? SwiftData and iCloud
I'm a first time developer for Swift, (getting on a bit!) but after programming in VB back in the late 90s I wanted to write an app for iPhone. I think I might have gone about it the wrong way, but I've got an app that works great on my iPhone or works great on my iPad. It saves the data persistently on device, but, no matter how much I try, what I read and even resorting to AI (ChatGPT & Gemini) I still can't get it to save the data on iCloud to synchronise between the two and work across the devices. I think it must be something pretty fundamental I'm doing (or more likely not doing) that is causing the issue. I'm setting up my signing and capabilities as per the available instructions but I always get a fatal error. I think it might be something to do with making fields optional, but at this point I'm second guessing myself and feeling a complete failure. Any advice or pointers would be really gratefully appreciated. I like my app and would like eventually to get it on the App Store but at this point in time I feel it should be on the failed projects heap! I've even tried a new Xcode project for iOS and asking it to use SwiftData and CloudKit - the default project should work - right? But it absolutely doesn't for me. Please send help!!

SwiftData: Crash when deleting from model, but only in prod
I'm testing my app before releasing to testers, and my app (both macOS and iOS) is crashing when I perform one operation, but only in the production build. I have data that loads from a remote source, and can be periodically updated. There is an option to delete all of that data from the iCloud data store, unless the user has modified a record. Each table has a flag to indicate that (userEdited). Old CloudKit Data Repopulating after a Local Reset
We are trying to solve for the following condition with SwiftData + CloudKit: Lots of data in CloudKit Perform "app-reset" to clear data & App settings and start fresh. Reset data models with try modelContext.delete(model:_) myModel.count() confirms local deletion (0 records); but iCloud Console shows expectedly slow process to delete. Old CloudKit data is returning during the On Boarding process. Questions: • Would making a new iCloud Zone for each reset work around this, as the new zone would be empty? We're having trouble finding details about how to do this with SwiftData. • Would CKSyncEngine have a benefit over the default SwiftData methods? Open to hearing if anyone has experienced a similar challenge and how you worked around it!

AppMigrationKit future plans
In the future, is there any plans to have AppMigrationKit for macOS-Windows cross transfers (or Linux, ChromeOS, HarmonyOS NEXT, etc)? Additionally, will the migration framework remain just iOS <-> Android or will it extend to Windows tablets, ChromeOS Tablets, HarmonyOS NEXT, KaiOS, Series 30+, Linux mobile, etc.

Importing Data into SwiftData in the Background Using ModelActor and @Query
I have an app with fairly typical requirements - I need to insert some data (in my case from the network but could be anything) and I want to do it in the background to keep the UI responsive. I'm using SwiftData. I've created a ModelActor that does the importing and using the debugger I can confirm that the data is indeed being inserted. On the UI side, I'm using @Query and a SwiftUI List to display the data but what I am seeing is that @Query is not updating as the data is being inserted. I have to quit and re-launch the app in order for the data to appear, almost like the context running the UI isn't communicating with the context in the ModelActor. I've included a barebones sample project. To reproduce the issue, tap the 'Background Insert' button. You'll see logs that show items being inserted but the UI is not showing any data. SwiftData and CloudKit Issues
Hi, I'm using SwiftData in my app, and I want to sent data to iCloud with CloudKit, but I found that If the user turns off my App iCloud sync function in the settings App, the local data will also be deleted. A better way is maintaining the local data, just don't connect to iCloud.How should I do that? I need guidance!!! I'm just getting started with CloudKit And I would be appreciated!

Crash with NSAttributedString in Core Data
I am trying out the new AttributedString binding with SwiftUI’s TextEditor in iOS26. I need to save this to a Core Data database. Core Data has no AttributedString type, so I set the type of the field to “Transformable”, give it a custom class of NSAttributedString, and set the transformer to NSSecureUnarchiveFromData When I try to save, I first convert the Swift AttributedString to NSAttributedString, and then save the context. iOS 26.1 and SwiftData: Can't reuse store?
I have one target building and filling the SwiftData store and then copying the same store file to another target of the app to use the contents. Mac App Crashing with Illegal Instructions
I have made a Swift App for MacOS 15 under XCode 16.3, which runs fine. I also want to run it under the previous MacOS 14. Unfortunately it crashes without even starting up (it does not even reach the first log output statement on the first view) The crash reason is Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000000000 Termination Reason: Namespace SIGNAL, Code 4 Illegal instruction: 4 Terminating Process: exc handler [2970] I have set the miminium deployment to MacOS 14.0 but to no effect. The XCode machine is a MacOS 15.4 on Arm M3 and the target machine is MacOS 14.7.5 on Intel (MacBook Air) I think it might be related to the compiler and linker settings.

Default zone is not accessible in shared DB - cloudKit
I am trying to save to cloud kit shared database. The shared database does not allow zones to be set up. Best Practices for Using CKAssets in Public CloudKit Database for Social Features
Hello Apple Team, We are looking at developing an iOS feature on our current development that stores user-generated images as CKAssets in the public CloudKit database, with access control enforced by our app’s own logic (not CloudKit Sharing as that has a limit of 100 shares per device). Each story or post is a public record, and users only see content based on buddy relationships handled within the app. We’d like to confirm that this pattern is consistent with Apple’s best practices for social features. Specifically: Is it acceptable to store user-uploaded CKAssets in the public CloudKit database, as long as access visibility is enforced by the app? Are there any performance or quota limitations (e.g., storage, bandwidth, or user sync limits) that apply to CKAssets in the public database when used at scale? Would CloudKit Sharing be recommended instead, even if we don’t require user-to-user sharing invitations? For App Review, is this model (public CKAssets + app-enforced access control) compliant with Apple’s data and security expectations? Core Data: Main actor-isolated property can not be mutated from a Sendable closure
I'm running a project with these settings: Default Actor Isolation: MainActor Approachable Concurrency: Yes Strict Concurrency Checking: Complete (this issue does not appear on the other two modes) I receive a warning for this very simple use case. Can I actually fix anything about this or is this a case of Core Data not being entirely ready for this? In reference to this, there was a workaround listed in the release notes of iOS 26 beta 5 (https://forums.swift.org/t/defaultisolation-mainactor-and-core-data-background-tasks/80569/22). Does this still apply as the only fix for this? This is a simplified sample meant to run on a background context. Error - Never access a full future backing data
Hi, I am building an iOS app with SwiftUI and SwiftData for the first time and I am experiencing a lot of difficulty with this error: Thread 44: Fatal error: Never access a full future backing data - PersistentIdentifier(id: SwiftData.PersistentIdentifier.ID(backing: SwiftData.PersistentIdentifier.PersistentIdentifierBacking.managedObjectID(<ID> <x-coredata://<UUID>/MySwiftDataModel/p1>)), backing: SwiftData.PersistentIdentifier.PersistentIdentifierBacking.managedObjectID(<ID> <x-coredata://<UUID>/MySwiftDataModel/p1>)) with Optional(<UUID>) I have been trying to figure out what the problem is, but unfortunately I cannot find any information in the documentation or on other sources online. My only theory about this error is that it is somehow related to fetching an entity that has been created in-memory, but not yet saved to the modelContext in SwiftData. However, when I am trying to debug this, it's not clear this is the case. Sometimes the error happens, sometimes it doesn't. Saving manually does not always solve the error. Therefore, it would be extremely helpful if someone could explain what this error means and whether there are any best practices to do with SwiftData, or some pitfalls to avoid (such as wrapping my model context into a repository class). To be clear, this problem is NOT related to one area of my code, it happens throughout my app, at unpredictable places and time. Given that there is very little information related to this error, I am at a loss at how to make sure that this never happens. This question has been asked on the forum here as well as on StackOverflow, Reddit (can't link that here), but none of the answers worked for me. Increase Background Asset Limitations
Hello, From the documentation linked below, the limitations for Background Assets are the following: Size Limit: 200 GB Asset Pack Count: 100 I'm expecting I will need ~175 Asset Packs and around 500GB of storage. I understand Background Assets is a new, but is there a process or a potential that these limits will be increased in the future? Or is there a way to request an increase? I've tried contacting Apple Support as this is more of an Admin issue, however they've directed me here. SwiftData and CloudKit not synching between devices
Hi, Not sure how to describe my issue best: I am using SwiftData and CloudKit to store my data. In the past, when I tested my app on different devices, the data would sync between the devices automatically. For whatever reason this has stopped now and the data no longer syncs. No matter what I do, it feels as if all the data is actually stored just locally on each device. How can I check if the data is actually stored in the cloud and what could be reasons, why its no longer synching between my devices (and yes, I am logged in with the same Apple ID on all devices). Correct SwiftData Concurrency Logic for UI and Extensions
Hi everyone, I'm looking for the correct architectural guidance for my SwiftData implementation. In my Swift project, I have dedicated async functions for adding, editing, and deleting each of my four models. I created these functions specifically to run certain logic whenever these operations occur. Since these functions are asynchronous, I call them from the UI (e.g., from a button press) by wrapping them in a Task. I've gone through three different approaches and am now stuck. Approach 1: @MainActor Functions Initially, my functions were marked with @MainActor and worked on the main ModelContext. This worked perfectly until I added support for App Intents and Widgets, which caused the app to crash with data race errors. Approach 2: Passing ModelContext as a Parameter To solve the crashes, I decided to have each function receive a ModelContext as a parameter. My SwiftUI views passed the main context (which they get from @Environment(\.modelContext)), while the App Intents and Widgets created and passed in their own private context. However, this approach still caused the app to crash sometimes due to data race errors, especially during actions triggered from the main UI. Approach 3: Creating a New Context in Each Function I moved to a third approach where each function creates its own ModelContext to work on. This has successfully stopped all crashes. However, now the UI actions don't always react or update. For example, when an object is added, deleted, or edited, the change isn't reflected in the UI. I suspect this is because the main context (driving the UI) hasn't been updated yet, or because the async function hasn't finished its work. My Question I'm not sure what to do or what the correct logic should be. How should I structure my data operations to support the main UI, Widgets, and App Intents without causing crashes or UI update failures? SwiftData and iCloud
I'm a first time developer for Swift, (getting on a bit!) but after programming in VB back in the late 90s I wanted to write an app for iPhone. I think I might have gone about it the wrong way, but I've got an app that works great on my iPhone or works great on my iPad. It saves the data persistently on device, but, no matter how much I try, what I read and even resorting to AI (ChatGPT & Gemini) I still can't get it to save the data on iCloud to synchronise between the two and work across the devices. I think it must be something pretty fundamental I'm doing (or more likely not doing) that is causing the issue. I'm setting up my signing and capabilities as per the available instructions but I always get a fatal error. I think it might be something to do with making fields optional, but at this point I'm second guessing myself and feeling a complete failure. Any advice or pointers would be really gratefully appreciated. I like my app and would like eventually to get it on the App Store but at this point in time I feel it should be on the failed projects heap! I've even tried a new Xcode project for iOS and asking it to use SwiftData and CloudKit - the default project should work - right? But it absolutely doesn't for me. Please send help!!

SwiftData: Crash when deleting from model, but only in prod
I'm testing my app before releasing to testers, and my app (both macOS and iOS) is crashing when I perform one operation, but only in the production build. I have data that loads from a remote source, and can be periodically updated. There is an option to delete all of that data from the iCloud data store, unless the user has modified a record. Each table has a flag to indicate that (userEdited). Old CloudKit Data Repopulating after a Local Reset
We are trying to solve for the following condition with SwiftData + CloudKit: Lots of data in CloudKit Perform "app-reset" to clear data & App settings and start fresh. Reset data models with try modelContext.delete(model:_) myModel.count() confirms local deletion (0 records); but iCloud Console shows expectedly slow process to delete. Old CloudKit data is returning during the On Boarding process. Questions: • Would making a new iCloud Zone for each reset work around this, as the new zone would be empty? We're having trouble finding details about how to do this with SwiftData. • Would CKSyncEngine have a benefit over the default SwiftData methods? Open to hearing if anyone has experienced a similar challenge and how you worked around it!

AppMigrationKit future plans
In the future, is there any plans to have AppMigrationKit for macOS-Windows cross transfers (or Linux, ChromeOS, HarmonyOS NEXT, etc)? Additionally, will the migration framework remain just iOS <-> Android or will it extend to Windows tablets, ChromeOS Tablets, HarmonyOS NEXT, KaiOS, Series 30+, Linux mobile, etc.

Importing Data into SwiftData in the Background Using ModelActor and @Query
I have an app with fairly typical requirements - I need to insert some data (in my case from the network but could be anything) and I want to do it in the background to keep the UI responsive. I'm using SwiftData. I've created a ModelActor that does the importing and using the debugger I can confirm that the data is indeed being inserted. On the UI side, I'm using @Query and a SwiftUI List to display the data but what I am seeing is that @Query is not updating as the data is being inserted. I have to quit and re-launch the app in order for the data to appear, almost like the context running the UI isn't communicating with the context in the ModelActor. I've included a barebones sample project. To reproduce the issue, tap the 'Background Insert' button. You'll see logs that show items being inserted but the UI is not showing any data. SwiftData and CloudKit Issues
Hi, I'm using SwiftData in my app, and I want to sent data to iCloud with CloudKit, but I found that If the user turns off my App iCloud sync function in the settings App, the local data will also be deleted. A better way is maintaining the local data, just don't connect to iCloud.How should I do that? I need guidance!!! I'm just getting started with CloudKit And I would be appreciated!

Crash with NSAttributedString in Core Data
I am trying out the new AttributedString binding with SwiftUI’s TextEditor in iOS26. I need to save this to a Core Data database. Core Data has no AttributedString type, so I set the type of the field to “Transformable”, give it a custom class of NSAttributedString, and set the transformer to NSSecureUnarchiveFromData When I try to save, I first convert the Swift AttributedString to NSAttributedString, and then save the context. iOS 26.1 and SwiftData: Can't reuse store?
I have one target building and filling the SwiftData store and then copying the same store file to another target of the app to use the contents. Mac App Crashing with Illegal Instructions
I have made a Swift App for MacOS 15 under XCode 16.3, which runs fine. I also want to run it under the previous MacOS 14. Unfortunately it crashes without even starting up (it does not even reach the first log output statement on the first view) The crash reason is Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000000000 Termination Reason: Namespace SIGNAL, Code 4 Illegal instruction: 4 Terminating Process: exc handler [2970] I have set the miminium deployment to MacOS 14.0 but to no effect. The XCode machine is a MacOS 15.4 on Arm M3 and the target machine is MacOS 14.7.5 on Intel (MacBook Air) I think it might be related to the compiler and linker settings.
